VMware Reaffirms its Commitment to Costa Rica by Expanding its Operations and Workforce

San Jose, Costa Rica. December 10, 2015. VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, today inaugurated its new operations center in Costa Rica. During inauguration ceremonies, the company announced its intention to continue to hire local talent and grow its presence in the local market.

The inauguration of the new offices, located in the America Free Zone (AFZ) business center, included the participation of Costa Rica President Luis Guillermo Solis, Jorge Sequeira, the director general of CINDE and Pedro Beirute, managing director of PROCOMER.

VMware senior leadership present included Pradeep Vancheeswaran, senior vice president of global operations and Thomas George, vice president of operations.

“During the last quarter of 2015, there were 25 key investments made by various corporations in the country, which allowed us to reach our annual goal. This has meant the generation of more than 4,500 jobs in Costa Rica,” said President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera. “This expansion by VMware is another demonstration of the faith investors have in our country thanks to the stability, competitive advantages, and quality talent pool Costa Rica has to offer.”

VMware was founded in the United States in 1998 with headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The company began operations in Costa Rica in late 2012. The company grew its talent pool of collaborators significantly from 2013 to 2014, an 83% increase. In 2015 alone, the company had and an impressive 143% increase in just the first three quarters of 2015. Today, VMware has more than 480 collaborators in Costa Rica, and continues to have a strong commitment to growth in 2016, positioning it as the largest center for VMware in Latin America.

From the new center of operations, VMware manages internal processes and services that support global or regional organizations in three principal areas: shared services, IT and technical support, and specialized sales services. VMware collaborators in Costa Rica are dedicated to human resources, payroll, accounting, financial analysis, project management, contract management, licensing compliance, sales support, sales development, web development, graphic design, applications support, among other key areas.

“Costa Rica is an ideal location, as there is good adoption of the Engish language, and the right combination of technical skills,” Vargas said. “Further, the passion and dedication demonstrated by our collaborators is impressive, and they have integrated well within the VMware culture. Jorge Sequeira, the director general of CINDE said VMware is an example of the evolution of the services sector in Costa Rica and the level of operational sophistication possible in this country.

“VMware is a model technology company for others to follow,” Sequeira said. “The services sector is one of the major drivers for employment in the country, with more than 50,000 individuals employed in this area. Services companies like VMware, represent 52 percent of the companies present in the Zona Franca. These companies export 65 percent of these services.”

According to the Minister of Commerce, Alexander Mora: “Office expansions like VMware’s bring a great deal of benefit to the country. These expansions enable the export of more than US $2 million in digital technologies and related services. Services exports overall exceeded $6.3 million in 2014, well above the 2010 figures of $4.3 million.”
