Medical Devices Leader Reaches its 15th Year in Costa Rica

  • Company is pioneer in medical devices manufacture in the country.
  • Medical devices will be the main exportation product in 2015.

San Jose, January 20, 2015. Hospira, a company dedicated to the manufacture of sets and infusion pumps, reached 15 years of successfully operating in Costa Rica, and is considered one of the sector’s pioneers.

Today the company has become a point of reference of the Life Sciences sector, thanks to its dynamism and recorded growth. In its 15 years of operation the multinational has accomplished several expansion processes that have led to generate employment for about 2,500 people.

Director General of CINDE, Jorge Sequeira, congratulated Hospira for its commitment and leadership shown through these years. “For CINDE it is satisfactory to have a worldwide renowned company such as Hospira. The presence of this company allowed us over the years to have a better presentation card in order to attract more projects in the Life Sciences area. We hope that in the coming years Hospira continues to grow at the same pace as in recent years.”

It is estimated that over 11,000 of women work for companies that manufacture medical devices, which highlights the importance of companies like Hospira in the social and economic development.

Medical devices are actually the second largest exporting product in the country and according to an estimate made by CINDE with PROCOMER in 2012, they will be become the first one from 2015.

Exports of precision and medical equipment have grown twice as fast as the rest of exports from the Free Trade Zone Regime with an average growth of 6.6% per year in the period between 2003 and 2013.

Costa Rica is the seventh exporter of medical devices in the United States, according to CINDE data based on numbers from the United States Department of Commerce in 2013. The country is also the second largest exporter of medical devices in Latin America, based on UN Comtrade 2013 data.
