Sykes Enterprises, Incorporated and Acer America Corp.
TAMPA, September 10, 1999 – Sykes Enterprises, Incorporated (“Sykes”) (Nasdaq:SYKE) and Acer America Corp. (“Acer America”) today jointly announced that Acer America has sold its Heredia, Costa Rica-based subsidiary, Acer Information Services (AIS), to Sykes. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Acer America, based in San Jose, Calif., is a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Acer Incorporated (“Acer”), the world’s third largest computer manufacturer. Sykes, based in Tampa, Fla., is a world leader in providing vertically integrated technology-based solutions. Sykes operates 32 technical call centers, nine e-commerce centers and 25 branch offices located in 16 countries.
“We are excited to expand into Costa Rica with this state-of-the-art facility, multilingual workforce, and the ability to provide technical support services to Acer America,” commented David L. Grimes, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sykes. “This agreement initiates Sykes stated expansion objective into the very strategic Latin American marketplace. We anticipate further growth in providing our world class support services to additional new and existing clients in the Central and South American regions, as well as Mexico. Costa Rica’s development as a technology hub, with a well-educated technical workforce, a government committed to attracting foreign investment, free trade zone policies, and a high quality of life is an ideal support center location. “We are enthused by our strategic alliance with Acer America, one of the world’s leading technology manufacturers,” Grimes added. “This relationship is a ‘win-win’ opportunity, one which allows us to provide superior service and quality to our customers worldwide.”
Max Wu, Acer America President and Chief Operating Officer, said as part of the agreement, AIS employees will become employees of Sykes. “We will continue our commitment to provide Acer Aspire customers with excellent service by the same dedicated personnel,” Wu said. “Acer America will continue to rely on the talents of these very professional and highly educated personnel.
“The sale and technical support contract we signed with Sykes represents the first step in a strategic alliance between our two companies,” added Wu. “Acer America and Sykes expect to explore future opportunities together on a global basis.”
Sykes Also Expands in Pacific Rim and Europe
Sykes also recently expanded its worldwide support services to customers with new call center operations in Beijing, China; Budapest, Hungary; and Istanbul, Turkey. These expansions allow Sykes to offer technical support through telephone and e-mail applications to its clients, while expanding business opportunities with new clients.
