Costa Rica: Central Pacific
Visitors will find sun, sand and a lively ambiance in the shores of Costa Rica’s central Pacific region. The region encompasses an abundance of amazing landscapes so one visit may not be enough to see all the wonderful natural attractions.
The central Pacific is located in the province of Puntarenas and most of its population lives in the area surrounding the seaport, located only two hours from San Jose. The nearby cities of Quepos and Jaco are strategic commercial and tourism sites.
The beaches are the number one natural attraction in this region and they come in all different sizes and characteristics, some are peaceful, others rocky, intense or surrounded by forest. A trip throughout the coast would let visitors admire beautiful birds, vegetation and different views of the ocean.
Hermosa, Escondida, Tivives, Saveegre and Esterillos beaches, just to name a few, are perfect for wave riders. Lodging of all sorts is available and can also accommodate different budgets.
Visitors looking for relaxation under the sun in the pleasant Pacific should consider the beaches of Herradura, Matapalo, Agujas, Tambor and Naranjo. These hidden retreats are famous for their majestic beauty, year-round sunshine, and various activities like horseback riding, hiking and nature watching.
Biodiversity in the region is extraordinary too. Manuel Antonio National Park, in Quepos, is a relatively small area yet it shelters many animal and plant species.
Carara National Park is home to the scarlet macaw, one of the most stunning bird species and popular among visitors of the Pacific region. The park features the largest group of this species in Central America.
One of the most picturesque areas of this region is the cluster of islands in the Gulf of Nicoya, in northeastern Puntarenas. In spite of their proximity and small size, each offers very distinct characteristics. Cedros, Caballo, Venado, Bejuco and Chira are just a few of these charming little islands.
The exuberance of the Pacific Ocean is an inevitable temptation for visitors and the Central Pacific region is a definite must-see for lovers of the ocean and the warm weather!
